There are over 3,000 varieties of mint which fall into either the peppermint
or spearmint categories. Mint itself falls into the same herb family as catnip, lavender, rosemary, and basil.
Believe it or not, many of the products you use every day contain mint oil
or mint extracts. Candy, gum, mouthwash, toothpaste, perfumes, air fresheners, and even medications are
a few of these products.
The production of mint oil is an expensive and complicated process. At Wappel Farms we do our very best to ensure perfect quality oil free of any impurities.
The process starts with the planting of the mint roots in the spring. The planting is done with a custom made mint planter.
Then the mint starts to grow into beautiful luscious green fields. After the mint starts to form purple blooms it is ready to
harvest. A mower then cuts the mint and gently lays it into windrows or swaths. The mint is left in the field for a period of
one to two days to dry. When it is dried to perfection a forage chopper is pulled through the field by one of our John Deere
tractors. The chopper picks up the mint plants, chops them into pieces, and transfers them into a "mint tub." The mint tubs
are then hauled from the field, two at a time, back to the mint distillery where the oil will be extracted.
The mint distill is equipped with a 14.5 million btu, natural gas fired boiler. The boiler produces steam that is forced into
the bottom of the mint tubs at 15 - 30 psi. The steam works its way through the mint plants vaporizing the oil from leaves and
taking it to the top of the tub. The oil and water vapor then exits the tub and flows to the condenser tanks, which are full of
cool water. The vapor runs through a series of tubes called the condenser and is eventually turned back into a liquid. The
liquid comes out the bottom of the condenser and into a tank called the separator. In the separator the oil floats to the top
because it is lighter than the water. After that long process we drain the oil of the top, test it for purity and quality, and then
bottle it up for market. That is how 100% pure, top quality Peppermint and Spearmint oil is produced by Wappel Farms.
